High Defeat Mudasa Academy to District title
Vihiga
High School hit Mudasa Academy 84-57 in the Western Province
Vihiga District term one boy’s basketball game.
Mudasa Academy, capitalesd on their home court advantage
and cheering support from the crowd to lead at the break;
however, Vihiga turned the tables around through Victor
Rop, Jacob Limo and Kennedy Were who dominated the second
quarter at both ends of the court to secure the championship.
Mudasa was playing in their first ever championship. Vihiga
had dismissed Chavavo 80-02, Vigina 67-06 and Kegoye 71-04
to reach the finals, while Mudasa recorded a 57-10 win
over Kegoye and 73-6 over Chavavo in the preliminary games.

KBF Confirms Kenya's Hosting
of Zone Five U-18 Games in April, 2010
Kenya Basketball Federation chairman, Paul Otula has confirmed
that Kenya will host the Zone Five U-18 Games in April,
2010 in Nairobi. Mr. Otula spoke during a KBF governing
council meeting in Nairobi, where he called on the basketball
fraternity to come out and support and make the event
a success.
Mr. Otula named Veteran Coach, Ronnie Owino as in-charge
of the coaching staff for the U-18 teams, to be selected
later in April, after the conclusion of the Kenya Secondary
Schools Sports Association-KSSSA term one games. The KBF
chairman informed that no player over 18 years of age
will be allowed to participate, and urged coaches and
team managers to stick to the rules. He reiterated that
“age
cheating is a vice that has to be eliminated completely”.
Somali have already confirmed participation, while confirmation
is being awaited from Uganda, Tanzania and Burundi. Rwanda
will only be sending a girls team, as they currently preparing
to host the boys final rounds later on in September, 2010
in Kigali.

University Tournament Men’s Final: Tangaza
College 58 - Laiser Hill Academy 55
Despite
massive crowd support, especially after taming the USIU
Tigers in the quarters and edging out Strathmore University
in the Semis, Laiser Hill Academy went down fighting 55-58
to Tangaza College in a thrilling Final. The school boys
proved they were worth sharign a court with the big-boys,
taking head-on a-star-studded Tangaza side featuring International
Richard Osano, Martin Okwako, Melvin Oketch, Bernet Ojay
and Alan Ouma to lead 45-43 at the break. Laiser Hill
got big plays from guard Sudi Ulanga, towering Mark Mayen,
Elijah Panek who proved hard to mark within the paint
and sensational shooting guard Makau Kiunga who sunk 3-pointers
at will, but the much experience Tangaza squad carried
the day with a narrow 58-55 win. Laiser Hill Academy,
who are the reigning Kenya and East Africa Schools Basketball
Champions, have already sent shivers down their opponents
spines as they target to retain both the country and regional
titles under veteran Coach Thomas 'Smatts' Olumbo. >>

HILLS NEW CHAMPS AS LAISER HILL RETAIN BOYS TITLE
Shimba
Hills High School from Coast Province whipped Tigoi Girls
High School from Western Province 114-54 to win the Kenya
Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) girls basketball
championship. Tigoi, the former champions had started
the game on a key note, building a commanding 16-08 lead,
before Shimba hills recovered to close in within half
a basket 20-21 at the end of the first quarter. The Coast
side then outplayed Tigeoi 32-7 in the second quaeter
to lead 51-27 at the break, and never looked back as they
bagged baskets till the final whistle. Purity Odhiambo
lead Shimba Hills with 48 points, while Ayodi replied
for the losers with 22 points. In the boy’s category,
tournament favorites, Friends School Kamusinga from Western
Province had no answer for Rift Valley based, Laiser Hill
Academy who defeated them 94-55 to retain the title. Laiser
Hill went up 20-16 after the first quarter, and teamed
up well to outscore Kamusinga 32-17 in the second quarter
for a 52-33 half time lead. They continued their onslaught
taking the third quarter 34-12 before slowing down the
game for a 12-9 score in the final quarter. Nol Mayien
shot 17 points and Sudi Ulanga 15 for Laiser Hill, while
Okari Ongwae shot a game high 31 points for Kamusinga.
Maseno
School hit St Austin’s Academy 75-52 to take the boy’s
third place, as Langata High School defeated Manor House
from Rift Valley 43-27 to take the girls third place. In
the Semi finals, Laiser Hill Academy fought from behind
to edge out Maseno School 58-51, while Friends School Kamusinga
had to fight to the last second to upset St Austin’s
Academy 79-74 in the other semi. The girl’s semis
saw Shimba hills hit Langata high School 66-21, while Tigoi
defeated Manor House 83-60. Shimba
Hills and Laiser Hill Academy will represent Kenya in the
East African High School Games scheduled for Jinja, Uganda
later in the year.
