Commercial Bank, KCB Lions guard, Tobias Onyango, is probably
one of the most explosive and consistent player in Kenya at the
time. Onyango's first contact with basketball was in high school,
Isiolo Boys Secondary School in 1995 but could never play till
i was in form four in 1997 coz i was too short n was not allowed
to play even in training sessions.
That
kept me playing coz I wanted to prove a point. He started playing
serious basketball in college, Egerton University, Njoro around
2001, but competitive balling started when he joined Nakuru Club
mid way through the 2003 Division One League Season. Two years
later, a much improved game and potential for great things, Onyango
moved to KCB Lions for the KBF Mens Premier League, where he plays
till today.
Onyango
has participated in several international assignments, namely:
2005- Zone5 Championships club Championships in Dar-es-salam,
TZ with KCB Lions
2006- Zone5 Championships club Championships in Nairobi with KCB
Lions
2006-African Club Championships in Lagos, Nigeria with KCB Lions
2007- Zone5 Championships club Championships in Kigali, Rwanda
with KCB Lions
2008- Zone5 Championships club Championships in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
with KCB Lions
2009- Zone5 Championships club Championships in Kampala, Uganda
with KCB Lions
His explosive
nature of play, swift shot and solid defense that saw him lead
the lions to the 2008 KBF Men's Championships earned him a National
Team call-up early in 2009 for the Zone 5 Championships in Kigali,
Rwanda.
OPINION
Kenyan players are great and they love the game, considering all
the sacrifices they make to play in the league. There are great
players out there who don’t get scouted or get an opportunity
to play in the leagues. With a little support the players can
make it to greater heights, BTW, I have respect for all the players
who manage to play in the Premier league.
Best team in the League, that’s obvious. Coz I love it.
But I also have respect for all the other teams
Josephine and
Thabeet are symbols of how hard work and commitment can take you
places (you should hear their stories) and I’m Proud of
them
MY PHILOSOPHY
The coach can give you play time, your teammates can make you
great, the press can make you famous, the fans can make you a
celebrity. But only the Love of the Game can make you a true Baller.
Balling is a gift that won’t be there forever so when I
step into the court (for practice or a game) I play like it’s
the last time and I treasure the moments dearly because not everybody
is as lucky as I am to enjoy Bball.
Something you may not know about me: I have my
fingers crossed that my son, ‘Kobe’ Bryant Plays bball
to a higher level than I do
