Patrick Odhiambo, who is known to many, as "Paddo" is one of Kenya's most explosive players; you blink-you get dunked on! by the 6'4 guard. Since his days at Kisumu Boys, Odhiambo has left a mark and trail in not only in every team he has played for, but also everywhere he has played, including Kisumu Posta, Tom Munyama Lads, NPC, Sky-Jammers-Uganda, Servio-Tanzania, APR-Rwanda, Barclays Eagles, Sprite Stormers and now- Club Nizwa in Oman. All this came after he begun playing competitively at Kisumu Posta before moving to Nairobi where he joined the Kenya Christian Industrial Training Institute- KCITI. Odhiambo won numerous college championships with KCITI Wildcats in the UCBL league, and countless dunking competitions both in the leagues and in tournaments. Odhiambo's basketball career almost came to a standstill in 2004 after he opted to stay out of the league and basketball in general, concentrating on his other love:- Music, where he goes by the name Dj Peanuts. He returned with a bang in 2005 for the Sprite Stormers, before leaving for Club Nizwa for the 2006 season.
International Experience:
"Its good being out there as I get to improve on my game, face tougher opponents, and most of all learn so much more about the game of basketball." he says. He goes on to add that" players my size are not as fast as we expect, but the forwards are huge, so we the guards have to work out more, and have heart to face the challenge"
Opinion on Kenya Basketball:
"We got all the talent, time, energy, and resources-however bad or sub standard, but we just don't utilize them. Instead we politicize the game and that's totally killing Kenya's basketball" Odhiambo points out. He goes on to add that " We are concentrating so much on the older generation, forgetting the youthful talent that needs to be nurtured for tomorrow- and we still expect to be Regional champions! That can't happen.we have to focus on development of the game-U14, U-17 and U-21".
In the community:
Odhiambo has a passion for community service, and recently while in the country after their season, he participated in the ALSA organized JaMalaria U-17 basketball camp as a facilitator and in-charge of entertainment. He had this to say, "For a long time we've been focusing on the older generation...and we forget there's talent that needs to be nurtured, JaMalaria presented that opportunity to coach and share with the kids, and was worth it as we came together for basketball and against Malaria. Odhiambo and his Kenyan colleagues in Oman Donated balls that were used at the JaMalaria camp
Personal philosophy: "If you fail the first time, take it as a challenge that you didn't work hard enough, get at it more and you'll succeed"
