| sharingSKILLS | Njau convincing Nuru-one of the youngest participants at JaMalaria Casketball camp that Basketball is Good! |
Nelson Njau has gone against all odds to make it to the international level, and he attributes all that to HARD WORK. After being interested in basketball while in form one at Eastleigh High School (1996) in Nairobi, Njau joined the Jericho sharks for the Division Two league in 2000 after completion of his studies, then NSSF basketball team in 2001 where he played in the Division One league, while the same time playing for the Kenya Industrial Training Institute-KCITI Wildcats in the College League-UCBL. With the Wildcats he won the College Championship under Coach Cliff Owuor in 2001, 2002. He later moved to Premier League side- Barclays Eagles, before joining Sprite Stormers in 2003, and later joining the reigning Champions-Ulinzi Warriors for the 2005 season. In 2004 he was selected to the Kenya national team and played in the East and Central Africa Championships. Njau transferred to Club Muscat in Oman for the 2006 season, completing a journey he begun almost a decade ago.
::. International Experience:
For Njau, getting to play out of the country is a dream-come true, especially considering he has struggled against tougher and bigger opponents and made it. "The games are very competitive, the facilities up to standard, and the treatment is ok," he says. Njau also adds that " my game has improved a lot in the last year, and I can say its because we get to play a lot of games, and participate in lots of tournaments. That's what we need here in Kenya. More games and tournaments to expose the players to different competition standards and help bring up the game."
::. Opinion on Kenya Basketball:
Njau feels that as much as the games are competitive in the leagues, there's dire need to develop the game of basketball in the country. "We need to have junior leagues and teams that will provide big teams with quality players in the future, and boost them with frequent basketball tournaments, clinics and camps to even make the players better" he points out.
::. In the community:
Njau has always been involved with community service and events, and likes playing with the juniors as he gets to teach them the game. He was recently a facilitator in the ALSA organized JaMalaria U-17 camp, as he join the fight against Malaria.
Njau and his Kenyan colleagues in Oman Donated balls that were used at the JaMalaria camp
::. Philosophy: "Never give up the fight, however hard it is"
