Young
and talented star, Hilda I. Luvandwa has maintained her prowess
in the Ladies basketball scene in the country since joining the
top league after completion of her High School. The fast paced player
has embraced the fundamentals of the game, including scoring responsibilities
which have made her a starter in both her club team, Eastern Queens
and the Women’s National Team.
It's hard to believe that Luvandwa's first contact with basketball
was in 1999 while a form one student at Kaimosi Girls High School
in Western Province. After completing her High School education,
she moved to Women's Premier League side- Sprite Storms in 2003,
though she played her first game for Storms in 2004. It wasn't long
before her coaches noticed her and they were impressed by her performance
during the Abraham Lincoln Basketball Tournament-2004 in Kampala
Uganda, in which she was instrumental as Storms won the ladies cup.
Later the same year, Luvandwa was again impressive during the East
Africa University Games while playing for her campus team- Dynamites
of the University of Nairobi where she was a Med Student.
By the time the Premier League tipped off in April 2005, Luvandwa
was more than ready to tackle the big names in the League. She was
at the heart of Sprite Storms numerous victories in 2005 including
the major upset in Mombasa where they hit 3-Time champions, Kenya
Ports Authority KPA ending their four year unbeaten run.
For Luvandwa, her passion for basketball is intense and her inspiration
to play is attributed to friends who have excelled in the sport.
In June, she shot a Championship high 34 points as Storms defeated
Tanzania's Jeshi Stars to lift the East, Central and Southern Africa
Club Championships for the first time, showing her prowess beyond
boarders. The Regional championship was her greatest achievement
so far in basketball. However, it didn’t stop there, and Luvandwa
was called to the National Team under Coach
Thomas “Smatts” Olumbo. With the Nationsl team,
she has been instrumental as the team represented the country in
various regional and continental championships, including the Afrobasket
Women’s Championships.
Luvandwa now plays for newcomers, Eastern Queens in the Kenya Women’s
Premier League, where she has teamed up with veteran players to
send shock waves within the league, and clear signals that they
are eyeing the 2009 Championship.
::. Opinion on Kenyan Basketball….
Luvandwa feels that Ladies (Women and Girls) basketball in the country
is not getting enough support and attention. She points out that
the men's sides are doing okay because of the support they get,
and she is mostly disturbed by the fact that sometimes when there
is a ladies game going on, the gym is almost empty…. but minutes
later… just before the men's games commence, fans stream into
the gym.
She also feels that the game is not improving at all in the country,
and points out that what is happening is players are putting more
personal effort and that's why the games have become competitive
as well as unpredictable. She goes on to add that the federation
needs to organize more tournaments to tap the young talent, give
incentive to teams and players who excel in games to boost the standards
of the games and player morale, and lastly organize the participation
of teams in tournaments in other countries. This she points out
will go along way in exposing the players to different playing ways
and help them exploit their full potential. On the games, Luvandwa
feels that they are very unpredictable and no one really knows what
to expect from a particular team, especially this season.
