Introduction:
The ALSA Volunteers Program-AVP is part of Another
Level Sports Associates-ALSA community empowerment program.
AVP was established in May 2006 by ALSA to
help them in the facilitation and implementation of ALSA's
Development Programs i.e. tournaments, clean-ups, advocacy
and campaigns, and training camps. The volunteers assist in
running of ALSA activities and in compilation of basketball
information, especially from towns outside the capital city
of Nairobi , where they act as ALSA contacts.
Members:
The AVP volunteers comprise of basketball players, coaches,
referees, and fans from towns, institutions, and teams around
the country, the east African region and the World.
Objective:
The main objective of the program is to incorporate sports
persons, in our case basketball players, fans, coaches and
referees, in active community service, community involvement,
and community empowerment through advocacy and campaign activities
so as to enhance capacity building and development as well
as growth of the sport.
The other objectives include;
- Create
a sense of social responsibility amongst players, coaches,
fans and especially the teams
- Targeting
to change/ improve the image of basketball and basketball
fraternity as a whole in the country
- Advocate
for sharing of information concerning the game amongst
the players, coaches, and referees
Activities:
The programs activities vary from;
- Helping
in facilitation of ALSA Development Programs i.e. tournaments,
clean-ups, advocacy and campaigns, and training camps.
- Participate
in community service which is to be done mainly in hospitals,
children's homes, slums and schools
- Participate
in advocacy and campaigns programs; World Aids Day, Breast
Cancer Day, Heart Ailments campaigns etc.
- Facilitate
Internships to Sports/Journalism/Information Systems Students
