Kenyan League | Eastern Queens Hit Mennonites, As KCA, KCB, Tigers, KPA and Parklands Baptist Win

Eastern Queens 90 – Mennonites Ladies Team 29
Eastern Queens Ladies Basketball Team registered a huge 90-29 win over Mennonites in a game they dominated the first quarter 33-09 after superb plays from Linda Alando, Emma Nyakweba and Hilda Luvandwa. Mennonites recovered defensively through Carolyne Omondi and Sarah Anyango to hold Queens to 19 points against their 12 points in the second quarter for a 52-20 scoreline at the break. On resumption, Alando continued from where she had left, teaming up with Michelle Otinda and Irene Makori on the offense, while Emma Nyakweba, Carol Ouma and Patricia Kalusokoma sorted the defensive end as they took the third quarter 19-03. Eastern Queens dominated the final quarter, with Alando sinking a 3-pointer with 4:30 remaining, Otinda adding another 3-pointer a minute later, and Hilda Luvandwa bagging a third 3-pointer with 1:32 remaining on the clock. Otinda sealed the victory with a baseline drive and basket with 23 seconds to go. Linda Alando shot 17 points, Hilda Luvandwa 13 and Michelle Otinda 11 for Coach Abel Nson's Eastern Queens, while Sarah Anyango had 11 points and Lynet Atieno 5 for Mennonites.

Parklands Baptist 67 – Africa Nazarene University 55
Parklands Baptist recovered from a bad outing on Saturday to defeat Africa Nazarene University 67-55 in a Division One encounter. Edgar Kisali led ANU to a bright start as they took the first quarter 20-14. Parklands recovered in the second through Ndambi Kariuki and Salim Busuru as each team scored 13 points for a 33-27 scoreline at the break in ANU’s favor. Things soured for ANU in the third quarter as they were outscored 15-06 after Parklands superbplays from Busuru, Kariuki, Radcliffe Nyamai and Mulili, who continued well to take the final quarter 25-16. Kariuki and Busuru each shot 17 points for Parklands Baptist, while Kisali had a game high 23 points for ANU with Yusuf Ramadhan and Peter Gathumi adding 9 points each.

Kenya Commercial Bank – Lions 72 – International Christian Center –ICC 58
KCB Lions overcame a hard fighting ICC side to win 72-58. Coming from a hard loss to Kenya Ports Authority that ended their unbeaten record to, KCB Lions came back with a different approach to silence the youthful and energetic ICC. Juma Ikapian sunk a three-pointer to open the Lions’ offensive plays with and Tobias Onyango joined the fray as the champions led 23-13 at the end of the first quarter. Ben Ogolla brought ICC into the picture with a few shots in the second quarter but KCB prevailed 31-28 half-time lead. ICC were down 18-16 in the third quarter. Griffins Ligare scored 13 points which included two three-pointers in the last quarter in which ICC demostrated signs of recovery to outscore Lions 18-14. Tobias Onyango scored 24 points, Ikapian Juma had 14 and Opiyo 12 as the Lions prevailed over a nervous looking ICC for for who Griffith Ligare shot 20 points and James Omune 12.

Kenya Ports Authority 100 – Strathmore University 08
Kenya Ports Authority-KPA had an easy run in their game against the Strathmore Swords, winning 100-08. Yvonne Akinyi led the scorecard for KPA with 17 points while Evelyne Akoth had 12 points. Strathmore who scored only half a basket in the second half had Carol Onzongo and Grace Wanjiku score three points each.

KCA University 47 – USIU Flames 46
KCA University edged out United States International University-USIU Flames 47-46 in a tough encounter. KCA were off to a good start with Evelyn Adhiambo and Monica Adhiambo bagging quick shots to take the first quarter 10-09. USIU Flames recovered early in the second quarter through Samba Mjomba, Evelyn Sande and Linda Sirma, going up 12-10 inside a minute of play. Their lead was however short-lived as KCA recovered to take the first half 21-17. Flames came back more focused in the third quarter with Mjomba, Sirma and Barbara Githinji coordinating well, taking the lead at 29-27 with 4:23 to go, and eventually taking the lead at 32-30 after a Mjomba 3-pointer with 40 seconds to end of third quarter. The tension packed final quarter saw Flames extend their lead to 37-30 after a Deborah Chan 3-pointer prompting coach Charles Goro to call a timeout for KCA. On resumption, KCA went all out led by Evelyn Adhiambo, Lucy Muchuma and Hellen Anyango as they tied the game at 40-40, and again at 42-42 with 3 minutes remaining. Mjomba put Flames ahead 44-42 and Barbara Githinji bagged a fader jumper for a 46-42 lead with 1:45 to go. Once again KCA recovered and took over the game at 47-46 after a Adhiambo 3-pointer with 34 seconds to go that put the scores at 45-46, and sunk her free throws to put KCA ahead. Mjomba had the chance to win the game for Flames when she was fouled at the end, but missed both her free throws. Evelyn Adhiambo bagged 18 points and Monica Adhiambo added 15 for KCA, while Sande Evelyn shot 18 points, Samba Mjomba 9 and Sirma 7 for USIU Flames.

Kenya Ports Authority 91 – Strathmore 52
Strathmore made a contest of the men’s match with Big Phil Amenyi dominating the front court. KPA led 24-15 in the first quarter but Strathmore stepped up to make the scores 12-14 in favor of KPA in the second quarter. Musa Odari scored a game high 20 points while Patrick Kirui and Francis Odari had 18 points each. Amenyi and David Ogola scored 16 and 14 points respectively for Strathmore.

USIU Tigers 81 – Cooperative Bank 78
Osano in action against Tigers!!United States International University-USIU Tigers held off Cooperative Bank 81-78 in an entertaining tie that had a total of 14 3-pointers shot, including 5 from USIU’s Abel Nson who bagged a game high 33 points. Tigers began the game on a high note after Chris Mulumba sunk a 3-pointer inside 10 seconds of play. However, Coop Bank turned the game around through quick 3-pointers from Richard Osano and Allan Ouma as they went up 19-08 midway through the first quarter. Nson then combined well with Harrison Kaudia to sink baskets that put the scores at 16-19 with 1:54 remaining, as Ouma replied for Coop on the other end to extend the lead. Nson bagged two 3-pointers including one at the buzzer for a 24-25 scoreline at the end of the quarter. Coop Bank were more focused in the second quarter, with the Osano-Ouma duo teaming up well with towering Dan Gaiko and George Kamau to outscore the Tigers 19-10 for a 44-34 lead at the half. Tigers were game in the third quarter led by Aaron Chan who hit a dunk in the early seconds before Nson made it 38-44. Coop Bank recovered quickly through Abel Kimondo who scored 6 unanswered points to extend Coop’s lead to 52-38, as USIU Coach, George Mayienga took a timeout. On resuming, Nson backed by Chan, Kaudia, Kennedy Lodiong and Neville Odhimabo led a Tigers onslaught as they closed in to within a basket, 61-62 as the third quarter buzzer went off. The final quarter saw Chan sink a jumper early in the quarter to tie 63-63, with Nson sinking a 3-pointer for a 66-635 scoreline. Allan Ouma, made it back to the game with a 3-point-play to put Coop 70-68 ahead, but that was however shortlived as Nson sunk another 3-pointer to regain USIU’s lead at 71-70 with 6 minutes of play. Chris Mulumba hit a jumper from the key to extend the Tigers lead, as Osano sunk a think at the other end to tie the game at 73-73 with 4:50 to go. Harrison Kaudia then sunk the game changing 3-pointer for a 76-73 Tigers lead with 3:31 remaining as the crowd took to their feet, with Coop Bank taking a timeout. On resumption, Ouma got a foul and sunk his freethrows to tie the game at 76-76 with 2:14 to go. With possession and determination, Tigers forged ahead on the attack which paid off with a Chris mulumba basket for 78-76 lead with 1:10 to go, before Nson made it 80-76 with 45 seconds remaining. Bernard Mufutu hit a jumper to bring Coop within a basket. With pressure mounting on them, coop picked a foul that took Kaudia on the line, sinking one of his two freethorws for a 81-78 lead with 6 seconds to go. Coop got possession and a chance to send the game into overtime, but Salim Ali’s 3-pointer went wide as Tigers took the game. Abel Nson had 33 points, Chris Mulumba 17 and Kaudia 9 for USIU, while Osano Richard Bagged 19, Alan Ouma 17 and Roy Kahure 12 for Coop Bank.

In the other games played, Eagle Wings defeated Sprite Storms 66- 25, KCA University maintained their winning ways with a convincing 67-59 win over Parklands Baptist, World Hope had an easy run winning 63-49 against Nairobi Pentecostal Church, while in Nakuru, Nakuru Club recovered from a bad outing at Kakamega last weekend to edge out African Nazarene University 52-51.
