U-17 Tournament | Juniors
Mark Africa Malaria Day: April, 2007
Junior
community basketball groups marked the 2007 Africa Malaria Day by
participating in a U-17 basketball tournament, organised by Another
Level Sports Associates-ALSA at Kariokor Estate in Nairobi . The
event, which attracted U-17 and U-14 teams from Eastleigh, Komarock,
Kayole, Shauri Moyo and Kariokor Estates, saw the juniors compete
for basketball wards as they got the message of Preventing- Controlling-
and Treating Malaria: Africa's Biggest Killer of Children.
Malaria
is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Kenya . It is
endemic in 40 districts and epidemic in 16 districts in the country.
It is estimated that over 70 per cent of Kenya 's population is
exposed to the risk of contracting Malaria, whereby over 3.5 million
children below the age of five years remain at risk. It is further
estimated that a child suffers 3 to 5 episodes of Malaria per year,
and over 35,000 children below age five die each year from direct
consequences of Malaria. This translates to an average of 94 children
in a day. Health is a basic right! Help Fight Malaria by making
Kenya a Malaria Free Nation. Lets all partner to Prevent-Control-Treat
Malaria.
The
event was graced by Kenya NGO Alliance Against Malaria- KeNAAM CEO;
Mr. Gerald Mwangi -Walterfang, Friends of ALSA represented by Mr.
Steve Olweny, Yvonne Agengo, Matilda Makatiani, and Mildred Malubi,

GUEST OF HONOR'S MESSAGE: MR.
Gerald Mwangi-Walterfang
Ladies
and Gentlemen ,
It is indeed great pleasure
to stand before you today and be part of this wonderful occasion
whereby we witness Kenya 's young talent at it's peak. The Kenya
NGO Alliance Against Malaria- KeNAAM is privileged to partner with
you in this basketball challenge, which marks the annual AFRICA
MALARIA DAY (That was marked on 25 th April) and is encouraged by
the conscious decision by young people such as yourself who have
chosen to develop their talents in this field. We are particularly
touched by your initiative to run a mosquito net collection campaign
since nets are a proven tool to prevent Malaria.
KeNAAM through its Malaria
Advocacy strategy and support from partners have identified Sports
as the most effective way of raising "Voices" against Malaria. We
now appeal to you all to take on a personal initiative to become
"Goodwill" Ambassadors with a message that Malaria is PREVENTABLE
and CONTROLABLE. Today we ask of you to speak about Malaria because
it could deny a member of your family the chance to experience peak
of the talents. I therefore ask of you to "Komesha Malaria,
Okoa Maisha" (Stop Malaria, Save a Life) as we commemorate
Africa Malaria Day so as to "FREE AFRICA FROM MALARIA"
With that, I wish to thank
the event organisers, for this noble mission and wish them all the
best. God Bless you all.
Thank you,
Mr.
Gerald Mwangi -Walterfang
Chief Executive Officer-CEO
