Dominate 2009 Zone Five Games
Burundis
News Stars missed out on a semi finals spot after narrowly
losing 85-86 to Uganda's Falcons. Meanwhile, Kenyan
sides, Kenya Ports Authority-KPA (women) and Cooperative
Bank,(men) won the 2009 FIBA Africa Zone-5 Championships
in Kampala, Uganda. KPA were the first to register their
win after hitting hosts Kampala City Council-KCC 67-45,
paving the way for another Kenyan triumph as Cooperative
Bank upset Uganda’s Warriors 53-47 in a tough
duel. In the preliminary games, Stephen Omony, the star
player Thursday night ‘accounted’ for the
Shs72m spent on his signature by helping Falcons edge
Burundi side Newstars 86-85 in a Sprite Zone 5 Africa
Championship encounter at YMCA Wandegeya. The former
PSL Hawks star played like a possessed man, on a night
Falcons needed victory to survive elimination from the
Africa Club Championships qualifying tournament. At
the start, it was all Newstars. The Burundian's overran
Falcons 26-19 in the first quarter and went into recess
carrying a 50-38 advantage. That looked like a hell
of a mountain for Falcons to climb. >>

Clubs Eye Liberation Glory
Burundi's
renowned basketball clubs will attempt to make an improved
showing at this year's Liberation day tournament which
gets under today until Sunday at Amahoro stadium indoor
courts.
Dynamo
and New star basketball clubs arrived in Kigali on Wednesday
and will battle against Rwanda's heavy weights APR (defending
champions), CSK A, National University of Rwanda (NUR)
and Kigali Institute of Education (KIE) for the top
prize in the three-day tournament.
However, league defending champions Marine have not
been drafted into the tournament after missing the first
round which was staged last weekend.
'It's unfortunate that they (Marine) will not participate
because they are the best team in the country.
'They play attractive basketball and it is obvious that
their presence could have spiced up the tournament,'
a close source to the local basketball governing body
acknowledged yesterday.
On the road to last year's title, APR dislodged Dynamo
at the semi-final before ousting local rivals Espoir
in the final.

players Wycliffe Ochieng and Martin Ombok |
Burundi’s
Urunani men’s basketball team was the only foreign
team in the semi-finals of the 12th Edition of the East
and Central Africa Club championships in Nairobi Kenya.
Urunani hit Uganda’s Nkumba University 70-65 in
a game watched by the Burundian Ambassador to Kenya,
to book a semi-final date with Kenya’s 4-time
defending champions, Ulinzi Warriors.
In the semi-final, Urunani played their hearts out against
the fierce Warriors, taking a narrow 41-37 lead at the
half before going down in the last two quarters to loose
63-73. Urunani definitely stole the hearts of
many Kenyan fans with their fancy basketball moves and
plays and remain the only team in the championship that
gave Warriors a run for their money.
Urunain played Cooperative Bank in the 3rd and 4th Playoffs
game that ended 71-66 in favour of Cooperative Bank.
